always/never: a dialogue script

Two students having a conversation while they await their graduation ceremony to begin.

OLIVIA: This is it. We’re really here. Finally.

BEN: You were looking forward to this?

OLIVIA: Of course.

BEN: It’s really not as interesting as you think. When my sister graduated in this very room three years ago, I can’t remember anything from the ceremony except falling asleep.

OLIVIA: Silly, I don’t care about any of this.

BEN: Then what in the—

OLIVIA: Once we walk across that stage and take that fake piece of paper, it’s official, we’re free. Do you realize how long we’ve been preparing for this day? Twelve years. Twelve years of school. Four years of high school. We were just itty bitty babies when we first started; we didn’t know anything about college or student loans or budget cuts.

BEN: Yeah, something that like that.

OLIVIA: Are you excited?

BEN: …I’m not sure.

OLIVIA: Oh come on, you had the whole school year to think about it.

BEN: That’s the thing. There’s a lot I regret about this year. Always telling myself I had enough time. “Ah, it’s fine, I’ll think about it later,” or “I can do that next week, when I have time.” I was constantly saying that and look where I am now. The end, we’re done. And I can’t do anything about it now.

OLIVIA: I’ve always wanted to join a club. The knitting club. Gosh, I love knitting. But I was always so busy, I’d always say I’d go someday. And I never did.

BEN: That’s sure unfortunate.

OLIVIA: There was also this amazing English teacher I had in tenth grade. She made class so fun, but she left the next year, and I never got to tell her how awesome she was. I never knew I could miss a class so much until it ended.

BEN: I get that.

OLIVIA: What do you regret, Ben?

BEN: …There was this person I saw in the halls a lot. I never talked to her, but she had a presence about her that drew in whoever she spoke to. I liked that time she decorated her friend’s locker when they weren’t looking. She seemed sweet, but I never have the guts to say anything.

OLIVIA: Aw, so you never got to talk to her?

BEN: Nah…not ‘till today.

Kilo and Ebe

Friends Kilo and Ebe are talking on the phone one weekday afternoon, discussing people they know, when a person in particular comes up.

✧・゚: *✧・゚:* :・゚✧*:・゚✧

KILO: And now they’re together. Go figure.

EBE: No way, you’re kidding.

KILO: You wish I was. I’m serious. They’re literally dating each others’ brothers.

EBE: (Laughs) And how do you know all this?

KILO: It’s nothing, really, I just listen. Put on some earphones, pretend I’m listening to music while scrolling through my phone or space out or whatever, but really, I’m paying attention to all the juicy gossip around me. Nobody wants to bother the kid with earphones in.

EBE: That’s amazing. I never thought about doing that.

KILO: I’m sure you still hear things, anyway.

EBE: Honestly, it’s more like they tell me things.

KILO: You wanna fill me in maybe?

EBE: On what? What do you really want to know?

KILO: Actually, I have a question I’ve been dying to ask.

EBE: Go on…

KILO: What is it about this LEO character you have such the heavy hots for?

EBE: (flustered) Excuse me? I—I think he’s cute, that’s all.

KILO: In this world, there’s a reason for everything. And I’m sure you have a hundred-and-one reasons…. (EBE is silent) … really Ebe, I’m just curious, and if it’s too much you can forget I said anything.

EBE: No, I… I never really thought much about it. You know? I just said I liked him because I did. But I’m thinking about it now. (Hesitant at first, progressively more passionate) He’s a sweet guy. When his friends need him he seems to always be there. Even when you don’t need him, he’s there. He’s a bit clumsy, but I don’t mind… it’s adorable. If I could only hear his heartbeat, it would be the kindest one in this city.

KILO: Appreciate the sweet speech there, but you could’ve at least mentioned he’s hot.

EBE: (Giggles in nervous laughter) Yeah yeah, that too.

KILO: You gotta at least say it yourself.

EBE: …Leo is also pretty hot. There. I don’t know why you made me say that.

KILO: (Aside to Leo, listening to conversation): And now you know, man. I told you she thinks you’re hot.

EBE: (In flustered realization) You son of a—
