the first time: a spoken word poem

a spoken word poem I wrote about a year ago. I also recorded myself performing it, which you can check out below. 。*゚+.*.。

the first time
I notice the rhythm in my chest
once the calm of a river
become the crash of a waterfall

sinking deep into my stomach
grabbing for my gut
like a diver finding a treasure chest of gold
but ignoring it
only expecting to end up with dirt

and it’s not that you’re the dirt
in fact you’re anything but
but i’m afraid of searching
only for nothing to be found
I’m afraid I’ll have to come up to the surface
with what could be diamonds
maybe?
I am afraid of spending so much time
under the water that I forget to breathe

but what I could never forget
are the sparkles in your eyes
when you speak of what you love
your essence inside
a burning inferno
drawing me toward you like a moth
and as I get warmer
and embrace your flames
will you give me the chance
or return me with scars?

as I get warmer
you might burn me out
but without you
it only gets colder out
you comfort me

even as your cool winds send shivers down my spine
your chills colour my cheeks a shade of pink
i find my palms a nervous cold sweat
my mind a whirlwind of thoughts
calling out your name
every time

time
and time again
I find myself experiencing you
as if it was the first time.

once upon a time: a poem

when old memories and retrospective emotions occupy my thoughts, I like to relieve them by writing. This is a draft of some late evening thoughts I had, turned into prose.

once upon a time
a girl bloomed with rosy cheeks
her heart a time bomb
ticking
exploding
in reds blues purples pinks
all colours of ink
to think, once upon a time
as his colours collided
with her watercolour
river streams
his hands the hi-lighters
tracing every beauty mark
every spot
as though her vessel
contained a map of constellations
that he sought to explore the more he explored
where she resided in space,
in outer atmosphere,
helmet undone
her gasps for breath
held by his touch
to think
he were the meteors
that occupied ‏‏‎ ‏‏‎ ‏‏‎ ‏‏‎ ‏‏‎ ‏‏‎ her ‏‏‎ ‏‏‎ ‏‏‎ ‏‏‎ ‏‏‎ space.

once upon a daydream
a boy removed the stitches
from his treasure chest
a lock screwed tight
with seven more like these
at least
he let release the shooting stars
she stared, in awe
at what such a small frame can carry
a universe, a mystery
she hurried to reach each world in a spin
to her
his secrets were responsibility
to hold ‏‏‎ ‏‏‎ ‏‏‎ ‏‏‎ ‏‏‎ to touch ‏‏‎ ‏‏‎ ‏‏‎ ‏‏‎ ‏‏‎ to care
his aches his pains
to feed ‏‏‎ ‏‏‎ ‏‏‎ ‏‏‎ ‏‏‎ to mend ‏‏‎ ‏‏‎ ‏‏‎ ‏‏‎ ‏‏‎ to bend

once upon days upon nights
her mirage of colours
were left unwatered
or perhaps too often watered
where paper soaked thin
she could not tell apart
where it ended where it began
her mind a million puzzle pieces
tangled together
dangled unto another
grey uncertainties
beating ‏‏‎ ‏‏‎ ‏‏‎ ‏‏‎ in ‏‏‎ ‏‏‎ ‏‏‎ ‏‏‎ her ‏‏‎ ‏‏‎ ‏‏‎ ‏‏‎ chest.
